Diary of a Home Educating Nobody

A message from Ross Mountney, the author of 'The Diaries'...

My family and I have been Home Educating since 1999. Prior to that our two children, (born 1990 and 1993) were in Primary school for four and one years respectively.

They hated it and became less motivated and more unhappy! So we offered them an alternative. They jumped at the chance!

Home Educating is a joy and a struggle but then, so was school - actually more the latter - little joy, if any!
We have NEVER regretted giving it a go. We have no idea how long we'll go on - as long as it works for us all and the children want to - that's always been the deal.

People think it's easy for me to Home Educate as they know I was a primary teacher. What most people don't know is that I gave up teaching in disgust when the National Curriculum came in, and that much of what I saw in schools, e.g. the disrespectful way children are sometimes treated, the cloning of their abilities, and the unhappy environment many schools create, was the reason I now Home Educate. And I have now learned that my children do not NEED a teacher in order to learn - they just need a supportive, stimulating environment. Teaching often gets in the way so I don't 'teach'!

I started to write the 'Diaries of a Home Educating Nobody' for the EO newsletter to try and help and support other Home Educators with all the problems Home Educating throws up. And there are many of those - but for our family, those problems aren't nearly so bad as the ones we encountered with school!

Schools work for many children. But they are not ideal! Home Educating offers, if not an ideal, at least a workable and humane alternative! The 'Diaries' are an insight into how it works for us.
